JUST WHEN AIRLINE PASSENGERS were starting to feel comfortable by the presence of 6,000 National Guard troops, it turns out that more than a dozen major airports throughout the U.S. have been using guardsmen carrying unloaded guns.

While a National Guard spokesman confirmed the M-16 rifles carried by many solders contained no bullets, most did carry a magazine that could be loaded in the case of an incident.

Fortunately for passengers, no significant airport incidents have occurred since September 11 and none of the 'Barney Fife troops' needed to scramble for the bullets in their pocket.

To add even more concern, it was reported that Pennsylvania National Guard troops patrolling five of the state's nuclear-power plants may ALSO be carrying unloaded rifles.

"If a security breach did occur, the time it would take for soldiers to load their weapons to defend the facilities could prove to be extremely dangerous, if not deadly," said House Democratic Whip, Mike Veon (D-PA).
